Weekend plans, covered

Things to Do in Paterson

A city with a national park waterfall, a castle on a mountain, a restored Negro Leagues ballpark, and some of the best Middle Eastern and Dominican cooking in New Jersey. Here is the local list, with links to the official sites so you can plan around real hours and real admission info.

History and heritage

Start with the story

Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park

72 McBride Ave Extension, Paterson

Official Site

The 77-foot Great Falls is the reason Paterson exists: the second largest waterfall by volume east of the Mississippi, behind only Niagara. The national park wraps the falls, the old raceways, and the mill district where America's first planned industrial city was built in 1792. Walk the overlooks, follow the paths along the gorge, and time your visit for the sunlight on the water.

Paterson Museum

2 Market Street, Paterson

Official Site

Housed in the restored Thomas Rogers Locomotive Erecting Shop in the Great Falls Historic District, the museum tells the whole Silk City story: silk machinery, Colt firearms, one of John P. Holland's early submarines, minerals, and roughly 200,000 historic photographs of the city and its people. It is the best one-stop orientation to Paterson you will find.

Lambert Castle

Valley Road, Garret Mountain Reservation, Paterson

Official Site

Built in 1892 for silk baron Catholina Lambert and originally called Belle Vista, this sandstone castle crowns Garret Mountain with towers and a three-story galleried atrium. The Passaic County Historical Society ran it as a museum for decades, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The views over the valley are worth the climb alone.

Hinchliffe Stadium

10 Hinchliffe Stadium Way, Paterson

Official Site

A 10,000-seat Art Deco ballpark perched on the edge of the Great Falls gorge, built in 1932. It is a National Historic Landmark, the first baseball stadium ever to earn that designation, for its years as a Negro Leagues home for teams like the New York Black Yankees. After being closed for more than two decades, the stadium reopened in 2023 and is home to the New Jersey Jackals, with the Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium honoring Larry Doby and the game's Black history.

Parks and outdoors

Green space everywhere

Passaic County parks

The city's grand historic park on Broadway, with a lake, paths, and year-round community events around its classic pavilion.

The 28-acre Olmsted Brothers-designed park on Totowa Avenue in Hillcrest, open since the late 1800s, with ball fields and shaded lawns.

Recreation fields and playgrounds at 434 Rosa Parks Boulevard, a favorite for leagues and weekend games.

A quieter green space tied to the old Morris Canal right-of-way along the Passaic.

Markets and food

Eat your way through the Silk City

The Paterson Farmers Market at 449 East Railway Avenue has been running for 80+ years and is open year-round, with produce, groceries, and prepared food, and it accepts WIC and Senior FMNP vouchers.

Downtown and the Main Avenue corridor hold some of the region's most authentic Middle Eastern, Dominican, and American storefront dining. These spots are real and operating, with links to their own sites so you can check hours before you go.
